Reflection Week

Reflection week…this last week we were supposed to reflect…about our classes, about our experiences, about ourselves. Our program began this idea to have a reflection week this year we were the guinea pigs! Basically we sat through our classes with our teachers and “reflected” over our year. Personally I didn’t get much from that…but the idea of reflection week is a good one. So I decided to do my own reflection here.

Honestly I need to start from the beginning of my experience in Egypt because I have changed so much because of what happened that Spring and continue to change…

Basically I went from this…

To this…

I don’t mean to be down on myself from the past. But I am just really happy with who I am today and try to seize opportunities when they come by now instead of wave at them as they pass me by…(TJ if you ever read my blog that was for you =P)

So after coming back from Egypt is when I really began to change. Starting with my wonderful tattoo =D and I seized the opportunity to come back to Egypt as soon as I could! Which just so happened was exactly a year later Spring 2012.

Have I changed while I have been in Cairo this year?

I don’t feel like I have...I feel if I change it will be when I get back and I can see how my experiences affect my life…

I began the year really excited and slightly nervous to be back in Cairo. I was nervous because even thought I had been to Egypt before I had never lived in a foreign country for more then a few weeks! This was going to be almost half a year! I didn’t even have a plane ticket back! But coming back to Dokki and the same AP I had been locked up in for 4 days during the revolution felt like coming home…of course I remembered where everything was! How to get to class, the market and favorite restaurants! It was so familiar and comfortable it made me so happy =)

I was also nervous about meeting the new kids in my program…I only got along with a few of the kids from my last program and honestly probably wouldn’t have had a great time last Spring if we hadn’t been evacuated…

But have no fear! I got along with pretty much everyone this year! I really loved some of the people in my group! Like my roommate Pam. She was great support and a great friend. She was a little older then all of us and was overly prepared for EVERY situation, which came in handy more then once! =) She reminded me of my best friend back home, Sam. She was the perfect roommate for me and I’m so glad she chose my room =)

Also, there was Libby. She ALWAYS brings a smile to my face. I don’t know if I would have ended this semester so happily if I hadn’t had her to make my semester amazing. She was my Arabic buddy, my gym buddy and my walking to class buddy =) It was amazing how just walking to and from class with her could brighten up my day. She was neck in neck with my strawberry juice for the make my day instantly better award =P She also was there for me during a really rough patch I had and really was the only one I could talk to about it. She reminded me of my best friend from camp, Becky, too! Probably one of the reasons I got along with her so well is because I love their type of personality!

There was also Kerrie. She basically is my sister, Alex! Sometimes it would get uncanny! But Kerrie was just so nice! I don’t think she has a mean bone in her body, which is so refreshing to be around! She also would always be watching a terrible movie on TV when I would get back from the gym and I loved sitting down with her for some of it and talking about the movie =P We had very different tastes in movies though lol.

Last but not least there was Ahmed. He was/is my substitute brother here. I can always count on him to love and eat ALL my desserts =) Which is a quality I love about him and my bro, TJ! He also can quote family guy better than I can! Ohh I got so many awesome movies and TV shows from him! I’m kinda obsessed with movies and he helped me feed that obsession! Wait is that a good thing…lol who cares! He was amazing support too and I felt so safe with him around in this crazy place called Cairo we live in!

And of course my program director is the best program director anyone could ask for! I’m so glad I got to come back and be a part of his program again =)

So if you saw all my pictures on facebook or have read any of my previous blogs you know we had a lot of excursions! But sometimes in between these awesome excursions we took class =P

My classes were good. My Arabic classes were great! I took 3 of them! Slightly overwhelming but I handled them well and really learned A LOT! But I also had 2 Egyptology courses that were a little weird and sometimes boring but I did learn how to read hieroglyphics, which is pretty freaking cool! This was a nice light course load for me seeing as I usually take 19 plus hours and am planning on taking 19 plus hours my last 2 semesters at App! So 16 hours – 5 classes was a nice bit of relief for me =)

What about all of our amazing excursions? Around Cairo and around Egypt!

We had a beginning Nile dinner cruise!

The only surviving wonders of the ancient world…The Giza Pyramids!

Exploring Islamic Cairo…

Up to Cleopatra’s city, Alexandria!

The Black and White desert weekend trek!

Hurghada! Spring Break 2012!

Garbage city in Cairo…

Amazing Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan!

Siwa Oasis!

Another Nile boat trip…this time a Yacht Party to say goodbye!

And finally a yacht day trip on the Red Sea…

We did so much and experienced so many amazing things thanks to our program =)
So now its done…I made it through my semester in Egypt. Everyone has left now except for 4 of us girls and soon it will be just 2 of us until the summer program begins in June. I’m starting work tomorrow morning…my internship! Really nervous about it…really want to do an amazing job with them! I’m ready to begin the next chapter of my life! I will miss everyone and the house will be quiet but I needed the change and quiet! I’m looking forward to another 6 weeks working and living in Cairo!

A normal day...

So, recently I have heard some concern over the safety of living in Cairo. Yes we are having some fresh protests and police violence over the upcoming elections and the military still being in power but I see none of this! The only affect we feel is that traffic can be horrendous during protests =P So, I’d like to go over what my typical day in Cairo is like…

Me and my amazing Egyptian friend Mariam

view from my AP

Wake up in the morning isa (in sha’ allah=god willing) I don’t sleep through my alarm because I have to be up at 7am and morning class at 9 am the 4 days a week I have class =) So I wake up eat a quick breakfast usually a scrumptious hard boiled egg! And leave the AP…I say good morning to our Bowab (kind of like a doorman but he lives in the building and is also security and repair man…) I weave my way through all the kids/teens in school uniforms about to go to school and begin walking to class. Recently I’ve been listening to my iPod to class since it cuts out the weird things people say to me and the small bit of harassment I get. But my iPod makes everything ok =)

Its sunny and nice in the morning. I love passing the same old buildings and walking through the hazardous Cairo street traffic then turning down my side road that is filled with green trees and bright purple and yellow flowers. Oh and I pass that same building everyday that was a pit when I first got here but now has 3 stories! The occasional street kitty passes me…I love seeing cars that would never slow down for a human slow down for a street kitty =)

Another scary traffic filled street that I breeze through with barely a thought =P Oh Costa Coffee and Hardees looks like it’s the turn to my street where my classes are! I see the same people opening up their stands…it’s another peaceful side road full of bright green trees magically shooting through the concrete!

Qambiz - where I take classes

A little walk and I’m here at Qambiz Villa where I take my classes. I say good morning to the old man who waters the sidewalk (yes I said waters the sidewalk lol) and to our security men. You basically say good morning to everyone here =P

Qambiz balcony

Up to the third and top floor of the small villa to take my first class (Intro to ancient Egypt Sun and Weds. And Hieroglyphics Mon and Thurs.) No one is ever there that early in the morning lol 9am is too early in Egypt for life. But when I get out of class around 10:20am people have arrived! Fellow classmates, our program director and our teachers all 2 of them hehe.

Arabic class next! Whew stressful class great teacher though! Then quick break to grab lunch around noon. Usually I ate a HUGE navel orange but now I run down to the fruit stand and buy an apple. But there is also a great Waffle Shop next door where we sometimes splurge and eat a wonderfully decadent waffle with nutella and strawberries! But then of course I have my final class of the day (Colloquial Arabic Sun and Weds. And Media Arabic Mon and Thurs)

Me and Libby in Siwa

Time for my walk back to home =) Sometimes I’ll walk with Libby since we always have our last class together…we’ll talk about everything family, friends, pets, home, Egypt its always a fun walk with her =) But often I’ll be on my own which is peaceful after 3-4 hours of hardcore Arabic classes!

My lovely juice store

Same way back except this time a lot more cars! Cairo has woken up! Close to my AP I swing by my juice store! What would I do without my strawberry juice! All the guys in the store know me =) I walk in and hear 3 guys say “Aseer farawlah takeaway!” Which just means strawberry juice to go! They all smile at me and I say hey =)  No matter how rough a day I had I can’t help being so happy when I drink my juice the trees seem greener the sky bluer and life seems a little bit better =D

Apartment time! Relax with some lunch and a TV show. Maybe some laying out on our wonderful balcony and some homework or reading a book. Usually homework everyday =P Then off to the gym…I go to the gym about 4 days a week! It is wonderful! 30 seconds away in a 5 star hotel called Safir.

A few of us got memberships to their health club and pool but mostly for their epic showers! Hehe I love it there. They all know me there too. The quiet nice woman who says little but is very nice and the guy with a mustache who always likes to talk to me in Arabic and asks me how I am. A few hours there and back home again to hang out with the girls, do more homework, bake something, read or watch a movie. Then bed!

There we go! Not a terribly exciting life but I love it! No protests or riots no danger (except maybe crossing the road lol) But we do have fun, go out and take incredible excursions throughout Egypt about every other weekend =D  The moral of this story is…COME TO EGYPT IT IS AWESOME!

Upper Egypt

So close to the end of our program…Spring Break in Hurghada was a success maybe I’ll get around to writing a blog about it sometime =P but during Spring Break we hit our half way mark. 2 months living in Cairo…2 to go…of course for me I am staying 7 weeks later into the summer and working as an Intern with my program so the end is not as close for me but it feels like it is…This weekend we went on a Nile River Cruise from Luxor to Aswan! And now all we have is a month of classes left then we all will go our separate directions! But more about that later! Our cruise was amazing I will tell you all about it!

Early morning flight…went to bed at 12am-ish woke up at 2:30am…leaving for the airport at 4am! I need to learn to get my sleep before flights! Because not only are we flying o Luxor super early but we are also beginning our tours the same morning that we arrive at 7am! Yikes! But true to form I don’t get much sleep but sleep on the way to the airport and on the plane =)

Finally, Karnak Temple. I am an ancient Egypt buff =) or dork as some may say =D but I don’t deny it! I love ancient Egyptian history! So Karnak Temple was definitely top on my sites I wanted to see! It is a temple complex added upon by many famous Pharaohs including Ramsess II (or the Great), Hatshepsut (one of the few woman Pharaohs), and Thutmosis III (Hatshepsut’s step-son who had her likeness and name removed from her temples!). We also feel special because my Egyptology professor is showing us around the temple and is a much more legit source then others… =P

But anyways we arrive to our cruise ship just in time for buffet lunch! Lunch, laying out, reading, napping…it is a very relaxing rest of the day =) This really does feel like Spring Break part 2!

picture from a different temple

Day 2 – Early morning again!!! Nooooo! Lol up at 6:30am for…wait for it…buffet breakfast! =) Then promptly leave for our next excursion to…the Valley of the Kings….again a bit of a history lesson for those who don’t know the Valley of the Kings is where 60 plus pharaonic  tombs are. Located on the west bank of the Nile because that is where the dead lives because it is where the Sun completes his journey across the sky and begins his nightly journey…so anyways! We go to the Valley and see some tombs =) No photography allowed though!

Next is Hatshepsut’s temple…I won’t bore you with the historical details behind this wonderful female Pharaoh but she really is an amazing topic I’d suggest for anyone who is slightly interested in ancient Egypt to look her up! In her temple we had a bit of excitement…first when we were doing our classic jump shot, the excavators on the side of the walk got mad and said we could break the stone! Fat Americans… lol so THEN me and both of the professors with us got in trouble for touching the temple! A little background…the temple is mostly newly built! They are rebuilding the temple to its former glory using the bits and pieces of the original that they had found…so all three of us clearly were touching new building parts! But they started yelling at us! Well to keep a long story short there was some yelling then everything was ok =P Not sure if they will want us back anytime soon tho!

Also, we got surrounded by small children…which was pretty scary considering I don’t like kids! =P

Good thing about having to wake up at 6:30am for breakfast and go on tours till lunch is that you get the rest of the afternoon free to do whatever you want! Well what we wanted to do was go up to the deck and get some sun, read, and swim =) So we did! I even did a couple of homework questions... =P

Dinner on the boat then early bedtime so we can be up tomorrow for our Murder Mystery game and more tours!

TO BE CONTINUED…

Alexandria...part 2!

Well I have been really busy the past month =) Different excursions and of course class! Just had 3 midterms and turned in some papers today! Heading off to Hurghada for Spring Break tomorrow! But before I can update everyone on my AMAZING Spring Break plans I need to finish my trip to Alex!

So Day 2 in Alex...

Last night was not as relaxing as my first night...my room locked me out! It was actually pretty amusing =P The first guy I go to looks at me like I'm the classic stupid tourist who doesn't know how to open a door! (which I'm not! I promise! =P) He tries the door...doesn't open...he starts looking a little confused hehe so he goes downstairs to get another guy. This guy is clearly a door guy lol he has a tool and everything! So he tries the door...still won't budge. He takes the whole door handle mechanism off to no avail! Meanwhile I get to sit waiting on a couch holding my borrowed computer cord tired and slightly annoyed but amused as I listen to their efforts...finally a third guy comes up. This guy is a much larger guy...guess what he was here for...to break the door down! =D They finally gave up and between all three of them broke the door down! To sum it up they moved Pam and me to a new room with no heat =P

But an amazing breakfast later (Ahmed ate about 10 doughnuts...) and we are off to our next excursion! To the Alexandrian Library! Alexandria in the times of the Ptolemeys (or to those of you not in Egyptology classes lol Cleopatra times) was world renowned for learning. And the Alexandrian Library held the greatest collection in the world! Unfortunately, a nasty fire (set by Julius Caesar) burned it down. Luckily, this new library can definitely rival its predecessor!

This library was amazing and HUGE. Had many important books...and some not so important... =P

I had to get a souvenir from my trip to Alexandria! Especially from the Library! So I found this beautiful wooden ankh in the gift store =) It matches my tattoo and necklace nicely =D

Onward we go...visit some castles oh hum but the exciting visit was to the beach on the Mediterranean ocean! Normally our program takes a break from touring in Alex to go have lunch on the beach...however it was closed for construction!

The local guys felt bad that we couldn't go onto the beach so they gave us a boat ride instead! =D

I LOVE boats! I LOVE being on the sea! The cold spray of water, the unique smell of the sea, and of course the clean air =) I think I could be happy just buying a boat down in FL with my best friend, Sam, and living on it =) Maybe if my future plans fall through it will be plan B!

But all good things must come to an end. Our trip to Alex was over time to head back to Cairo. After a great lunch and lots of dessert later! We are on our way back home...to Cairo and whatever our next adventure may be. =)
